The Doctors (TV Show) explains ‘Text Neck’
“Text Neck” is a condition used to describe the repeated stress injury to the body caused by excessive texting. The term refers to the hours we spend daily in a bent forward posture looking at our phones, laptops, tablets, game controllers, and even books and papers at works and at school.
The concern “Text Neck” raises is due to the many physical complaints and early onset of arthritic changes that are caused by the straightening of the cervical curve. Prolonged forward head posture while hunched over looking at devices causes the spine to straighten, ligaments and muscles to lengthen, increased risk of disc herniations and pinched nerves, along with decreased vital capacity and shortness of breath. Overtime, the reduction in the normal curve of the neck will cause the body to react and lay down bone to support the increased strain on the neck. This is the beginning of arthritis that can cause life-long pain and discomfort.
Kids are starting to use media devices at an earlier age and for longer periods of time. Preventative care and early action is the most important step to take to insure that “Text Neck” doesn’t become a life-long problem for you and your family.
